"Religion is the opiate of the masses" -Karl Marx
"Religion is for weak-minded people" - former Gov. Jesse Ventura
I'm sure that Jesse meant this in the kindest way possible. I understand that he has even
apologized, while refusing to retract anything he said.
Although it could be assumed that Jesse's comment was about all religions, I take his
comments to be specifically about Christians. I hold this view partly because
Christianity is still considered America's core religious belief and that Jesse is an
American citizen born and raised in America.
While such statements should not be taken as a surprise, it does reflect an attitude that
many have toward Christians, which allows them to dismiss any opinion if it is espoused
by a Christian. Jesse's comments are tantamount to declaring open warfare on
Christians as weak minded people! As much has been said by the mainline press and
many politicians against the Religious Right - which nobody has been able to clearly
define.
What is scary is that if these same comments had been made about racial minorities,
Jews, or gay and lesbian people Jesse would have been tarred and feathered. But since
they were about Christians, they will pass the vigilance of the press, except for an
occasional snicker that he actually said them in a public forum!
Is Religion for the Weak Minded?
